Wigan 0-2 Everton:Wigan Athletic's relegation fears deepened today when a 2-0 home defeat by Everton made it seven successive Premier League losses.
Wigan have tumbled from a comfortable mid-table position to 17th and are two points above the drop zone with West Ham United and Charlton Athletic breathing down their necks.
Everton took the lead after 64 minutes when David Unsworth's reckless tackle on Victor Anichebe conceded a penalty which was coolly converted by Mikel Arteta.
Anichebe had only just come on as a substitute for England striker Andy Johnson who was carried off on a stretcher with what looked like a serious ankle injury.
Wigan were unlucky not to level eight minutes from time when Josip Skoko's long-range drive cannoned off the crossbar before Arteta sealed victory from close range in stoppage time.
The result lifts Everton to seventh with 35 points, two behind Portsmouth who were beaten at home by Charlton on Saturday.
Later today, Manchester United attempt to open up a nine-point gap over champions Chelsea at the top when they play fourth-placed Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.
Chelsea were beaten 2-0 at Liverpool yesterday.
