Schools' Rugby Round-up: The relatively new Leinster Schools' Senior Cup format was designed to provide extra games and competition for the middle-to-lower ranking schools in the province and there was solid evidence yesterday that it has been a success.

Wesley College withstood strong pressure from CUS to gain safe passage into the Vinnie Murray Cup second round at Donnybrook. Loosehead prop Jeff Dand and fullback Andrew Slazenger crossed for the decisive tries in a 12-7 win.

St Patrick's Classical School, Navan, survived a late onslaught from Wilson's Hospital (12-7) at North Kildare to graduate to a second round clash with Wesley. The issue was in doubt right to the final whistle as both sides struggled on the heavy pitch.

Wilson's outhalf Simon Moorehead's early converted try was wiped out by efforts either side of the break by St Patrick's number eight Brian McKeever and openside Ciarán Smyth.

Mount Temple gave further indication of their progress when they had too much fire-power for The High School at Templeville Road.

Left wing James Edwards finished expertly for two of their four tries. Centre Ian Denham took time out from kicking all the conversions to muscle his way over the line and tighthead Edwin Ffrench plucked the ball from a surging maul for the fourth.

The King's Hospital made good use of a strong first-half wind to build up an 18-3 lead over Templeogue College by the break at Terenure. Fullback Harry Murphy and number eight Keith Young got in for tries and outhalf Luke Feighery made light of the conditions to strike two penalties and a conversion.

The King's Hospital defended their advantage with discipline to keep Templeogue scoreless in the second period.
