Spellman ushers in new era

LONDON'S hurlers booked their place in Division Two at Arklow yesterday when they recorded a 2-8 to 2-4 win over Wicklow

LONDON'S hurlers booked their place in Division Two at Arklow yesterday when they recorded a 2-8 to 2-4 win over Wicklow. A Decian Spellman goal 12 minutes into the second half finally killed off the Wicklow challenge after the home side had twice hit back in the first half to level the scores with goals from Michael Anthony O'Neill and wing back Stephen Kennedy.

Wicklow did well to recover, considering they were down to 14 men after just 10 minutes when full back Vinnie Mulroe was sent off. London, who were leading 1-5 to 2-1 at the break, were themselves reduced to 14 men when their corner back, Dan McKenna was sent off.

Louth's hurlers will also have fond memories of their game at Bagenalstown yesterday, for not only did they record their second win of the campaign, but they did so over Carlow, one of the division's stronger teams. An upset looked unlikely one minute from half time with Carlow leading by 0-6 to nil. Then, an Emmet Downey centre was finished to the Carlow net by Paul Dunne - a score which heartened the visitors for the second half.

A second Louth goal from Padraig Mulholland and points from Ollie Kelly and John Temple edged Louth in front. Carlow fought back, but they couldn't break down a very determined Louth defence, in which Tim Lowry was outstanding.

Armagh's 0-7 to 2-0 win over Fermanagh at Enniskillen means Fermanagh will be playing in Division Four next season. The home side led by 1-0 to 0-1 at half time but in the second half Vincent Mone hit over six points, five from frees, to guide his side to victory.

Derry wound up their campaign on a low note - a late Eamon Kelly goal ended their second half recovery and helped Kildare to a 3-9 to 2-8 win over the northerners at Newbridge.
