Women's Football: The 33rd All-Ireland women's football championship will receive a significantly higher profile as title sponsors TG4 are to broadcast an unprecedented 10 live games. Only four games were televised last season.
The announcement was made in Croke Park yesterday where captains from all 16 competing senior teams, along with the junior representatives, turned out for a photocall with An Taoiseach Bertie Ahern.
The additional games being televised are the four All-Ireland quarter-finals at senior level and the two All-Ireland junior semi-finals. Also, all matches broadcast live will be webcast live on www.tg4.ie. There will also be a highlights programme on Monday evenings at 8.30pm.
Speaking at the launch, Women's GAA president Geraldine Giles said: "The senior and junior championships are getting more competitive every season, and this year there are at least 10 counties looking like potential winners at this early stage. Our games continue to grow from strength to strength and last year we held the first international tournament with ladies football teams from all over the globe competing and this year sees the inaugural Compromise Rules series against Australia."
Last year's champions Cork and runners-up Galway have been installed as initial favourites this year, but Mayo still contain the spine of the 2003 All-Ireland-winning side, while last season's junior champions, Armagh, are tipped to make an impact at senior level.
