Ireland have blend of experience and hunger

Roy Keane is adamant Ireland have the perfect blend of experience and hunger required to win tomorrow's vital Euro 2016 qualifier against Scotland at the Aviva.

Gordon Strachan’s Scots come to Dublin having lost just one of their last seven games, but Martin O’Neill’s number two is confident his side can stall their momentum and send them back with their tails between their legs.

Among those vying for a starting place tomorrow is James McClean, whose electric performance off the bench against Poland in March highlighted his talent in the face of his struggles domestically with Wigan, who suffered back-to-back relegations into League One.

European Games lift-off

Tonight the European Games, which have been heavily criticised due to Azerbaijan's questionable human rights records and the countries suppression of those trying to reveal them, will be declared open in Baku by an Irishman - head of the European Olympic Committee, Pat Hickey.

We might know a lot about the controversy surrounding the games, but what do we know about the games themselves? Ian O'Riordan has answered all the main questions ahead of the opening ceremony.

Philip Reid speaks to Clare Balding

Yesterday at the launch of a new study called Wise Up, launched as part of a series of initiatives to try and work out a path towards greater female participation in sport, Sonia O'Sullivan said: "What women's sport particularly needs is that it is seen as important."

One person certainly helping women's sport be seen as important is Clare Balding, the face of Channel 4's racing coverage and now the BBC's Wimbledon highlights programme, writes Philip Reid.

Davy’s going nowhere

Despite Clare having only won one game this year and being without a Championship victory since 2013, hurling manager Davy Fitzgerald is determined to carry on beyond 2015 regardless of how results go this term.

Eight-time All Star Colm Cooper will make his return to the Kerry line-up after 16 months out injured in Sunday's Munster football semi-final against Tipperary in Thurles.

Meanwhile Donegal boss Rory Gallagher refused to be draw into a war of words with opposite number Kieran McGeeny after the Armagh manager questioned the physicality of the 2012 All-Ireland winners.

In his latest column, John Allen discusses the need for players to be able to share the intense feelings of jubilation or despair they might feel when the referee blows the final whistle.

Livewire Maguire

Leona Maguire sauntered into the last 16 of the Ladies' British Open at Portstewart yesterday, dumping out Sweden's Martina Edberg 8&6 and then France's Camille Chevalier 4&3.

Elsewhere Padraig Harrington and Graeme McDowell both struggled in their first rounds at the St Jude Classic in Memphis, shooting a five over par 75 and six over par 76 respectively.
