Cork City - 2 Waterford Utd - 3: Waterford United twice came from behind to score a victory in a lively contest at Turner's Cross last night. They led 3-2 at half-time and then showed remarkable resilience as they withstood constant pressure throughout the second half.
Cork took the lead after 18 seconds when Colin O'Brien found Kevin Doyle on the edge of the penalty area, the striker shot as he turned past goalkeeper Dan Connor from 20 yards.
Cork lost the lead in the 19th minute when substitute Billy Woods mistimed a challenge on Willie Bruton and the resultant penalty was drilled past Michael Devine by Daryl Murphy.
The home side were in front again four minutes later. Danny Murphy beat Connor when he swerved a free from the touchline over the keeper's head.
Waterford's second equalising goal arrived in the 41st minute. Kevin Waters' shot from 30 yards looked ambitious but Devine was helpless when defender Willie Byrne got his head to the ball and deflected it into the net
Waterford edged in front in first-half injury-time when a free from Alan Reynolds broke for Bruton who set up Pat Purcell.
