West Indies finished the third day of the fifth and final Test in Sydney in a rare position. Having lost the first four, they have an outside chance of winning. A strong opening stand by Sherwin Campbell and Wavell Hinds took the tourists to 98 for one, reducing their deficit from the first innings to 82 with Australia to bat last on a dusty, dead pitch. If Brian Lara - or anyone - makes a century today, West Indies would be in a good position, though they will still need to bowl far better than they did in the first innings.
Indeed, in West Indies' current form two quick wickets this morning and Jimmy Adams' side could still produce one last collapse, leaving Australia a small fourth-innings target to inflict their first whitewash on West Indies and stretch their winning sequence to 15.
Campbell (45 not out) and Hinds (46) chose their shots wisely and the pair were just short of a hundred partnership when Hinds was bowled by Glenn McGrath.
Meanwhile in Cape Town, South Africa powered to a 1-0 lead over Sri Lanka as the hosts completed a record-breaking victory in the second match of their three-Test series. The South Africans won by an innings and 229 runs inside three days, the biggest margin in their Test history.
