West Indies' hopes of reaching the World Cup semi-finals all but disappeared when they lost to Sri Lanka in Guyana yesterday, their third successive Super Eight defeat.
Sanath Jayasuriya hit his 25th one-day international century and his second ton of this year's World Cup as Sri Lanka hammered the West Indies bowlers to reach 303-5 at the end of their 50 overs. The total proved well beyond the home team after a disastrous start and they were all out for 190 to lose by 113 runs.
Jayasuriya struck 115 off 101 balls with 10 fours and four sixes and shared a third-wicket partnership of 183 with skipper Mahela Jayawardene (82) to put their team in a solid position.
In their reply, the West Indies collapsed to 42 for 3, including having captain Brian Lara stumped for just two runs off four balls.
Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Ramnaresh Sarwan gave brief hopes of an unlikely victory but Sarwan's dismissal, stumped for 44, sparked a mini-collapse.
Chanderpaul soldiered on but was finally yorked by Malinga on 76 to effectively end West Indies' hopes.
