Real Zaragoza fought their way back from a goal and a man down to claim a dramatic 3-2 extra-time victory over Real Madrid in a thrilling Copa del Rey (Spanish Cup) final at the Montjuic Olympic Stadium last night.
Argentine midfielder Luciano Galletti grabbed the winning goal nine minutes before the end of extra time with a stinging shot from the fringe of the area to give Zaragoza their third Cup triumph in 10 years and put an end to Real's treble dream.
England captain David Beckham put Real ahead with a superbly struck free-kick midway through the first half but Zaragoza fought back to take a 2-1 lead before the break with a fine goal from Dani and a penalty from fellow striker David Villa.
Real equalised with a 25-metre rocket shot from a free kick by Roberto Carlos just three minutes after the break and Zaragoza suffered a further setback when they were reduced to 10 men after Cani was sent off in the 67th minute.
But Real could not press home their numerical advantage and they, too, went a man down when Guti was sent off six minutes into the first period of extra time.
The teams traded attacks as they went in search of the winning goal but it was substitute Galletti who settled the game in dramatic fashion with his pinpoint strike.
In Italy, Lazio midfielder Stefano Fiore struck two second-half goals to hand the Rome side a 2-0 home win over Juventus in the first leg of the Italian Cup final.
The Italian international broke the deadlock in the 59th minute, taking advantage of a nod-on by teammate Fernando Couto to volley past goalkeeper Antonio Chimenti. He followed up 10 minutes from time by hooking in from close range to hand Lazio a healthy advantage to take to Turin for the second leg on May 12.
Juventus defender Igor Tudor was shown a straight red card eight minutes from time for a dangerous challenge on Brazilian winger Cesar.
