This Tuesday, April 12th 2016, UCC Students' Union (UCCSU) launched the 'Citizens of the 8th' campaign to call on the government to repeal the 8th Amendment of Bunreacht na hÉireann by highlighting the impact that it has on Irish women.
The campaign aims to call attention to the State's negligence in protecting the reproductive rights of women and trans* men.
In November 2015 a campus-wide referendum calling on UCCSU to campaign to repeal the 8th Amendment passed by over 84%.
Speaking at the launch of ‘Citizens of the 8th’, UCCSU Deputy & Campaigns Officer-elect Kate Moriarty said: “We want to demonstrate how the constitutional ban to safe abortion services in Ireland is isolating and ostracising a significant section of Irish society.
