UCD spinout Kinesis Health Technologies has been acquired by US-based digital health company Linus Health for an undisclosed sum.

Kinesis was founded in 2013 by Seamus Small and Dr Barry Greene as a spin-out from the Technology Research for Independent Living (Tril) centre at UCD. The company has developed a suite of objective, evidence-based tools for assessing gait, balance, mobility, falls risk, and frailty, improving the accuracy of falls-risk assessments.

Linus Health, meanwhile, is focused on transforming brain health, advancing the detection, diagnosis and addressing of cognitive and brain disorders.

“Kinesis shares Linus Health’s vision of combining clinical expertise with machine learning to usher in a new paradigm of proactive screening and intervention to support older adults seeking to preserve their health and way of life,” said Seamus Small, chief executive of Kinesis. “We’re excited to join the Linus team and work together to bring effective and impactful digital screening solutions to more people around the world.”

The acquisition is expected to further the Boston-based company’s ability to facilitate early detection of issues, with a shared focus on cutting-edge machine learning and widely accessible digital devices for proactive health screening.

"The more we can uncover about a person's brain health, the faster we'll be able to help providers intervene when something is awry," said David Bates, chief executive of Linus Health. "Acquiring Kinesis provides the opportunity to accelerate our progress in the key areas of gait, balance, and mobility – and garner related insights to shape our understanding of a patient's health and associated risks to better inform our clinical guidance and care plan recommendations."

As part of the deal, Mr Small will become managing director of Kinesis, which will operate as a subsidiary of Linus Health. Co-founder Dr Greene will remain as chief technology officer of the company
