Auction Results

Monday (September 25th), Dix Noonan Webb, London, "Paper Money" auction. A collection of 78 Irish "Lady Lavery" 10-shilling notes all sold. The top prices were achieved for notes issued respectively on May 6th, 1937, and July 14th, 1947, which each made £1,440 (estimates were £200-£260 and £240-£300).

Tuesday & Wednesday (September 26th & 27th), Tuesday & Wednesday, Sheppard's Irish Auction House, Durrow, Co Laois. "The Legacy of the Big House" – two-day antiques auction. Some 86 per cent of the 1,500 lots sold. Lot 617, A half-length portrait of King Charles I wearing the Order and Ribbon of the Order of the Garter, oil-on-canvas by a "Follower of Daniël Mijtens" (a 17th-century Dutch artist), €28,000 (€2,000-€3,000); Lot 3, Descent from the Cross an 18th-century oil-on-canvas measuring approximately 6ft by 4ft, in a carved giltwood frame by a "Follower of Pompeo Batoni (Italian)", €11,500 (€5,000-€7,000).

Lot 205, The Sunset Belongs to You (oil-on-board) by Jack B Yeats, £212,500 (£100,000-£150,000); Lot 89, WB Yeats's writing desk £187,500 – over six times the top estimate (£20,000-£30,000); Lot 79, Portrait of WB Yeats (coloured chalks on paper, dated 1906) by Antonio Mancini, £112,500 – over nine times the top estimate (£8,000-£12,000); Lot 64, Self-Portrait, New York (oil-on-canvas) by John Butler Yeats, £87,500 – a new auction record for the artist – (£30,000-£50,000); Lot 19, Mrs Herbert of Muckross with a Maltese Terrier (oil-on-canvas) by John Butler Yeats, £43,750 (£15,000- £20,000); Lot 100, WB Yeats's Chinese ivory chess set £11,250 (£2,500-£3,500); Lot 103, The Yeats family dining table, acquired by WB Yeats with the money awarded to him in 1923 for winning the Nobel Prize for Literature, £10,000 (estimate £1,500-£2,500); Lot 212, Jack B Yeats's artist's palette, £9, 375 – over 30 times the top estimate (£200-£300); Lot 91, WB Yeats's rosewood, monogrammed hair-brushes, £4,375 (£800-£1,200); Among the unsold were Lot 86, WB Yeats – letters to and from his first lover, Olivia Shakespear, (£250,000- £350,000); and, Lot 181, The Runaway Horse (oil-on-board) by Jack B Yeats (£150,000-£250,000).

Lot 314, The Summit of the Jungfrau by Sir John Lavery, £212,500 (£150,000-£250,000) [see pic]; Lot 333, Northern Rhythm by John Luke, £187,500 (£100,000-£150,000); Lot 370, The Fall by Basil Blackshaw, £162,500 (£100,000-£150,000); Lot 357, Railway Refreshment Room by Jack B Yeats, £125,000 (£80,000-£120,000); Lot 313, Japanese Garden by Sir John Lavery, £62,500 (£50,000-£70,000); and Lot 306, Sun on the Sails by Mary Swanzy £87,500 (£50,000-£70,000). Among the unsold were: Lot 317, Nude Seated on a Chaise Longue by Roderic O'Conor, (£70,000-£100,000); and, Lot 336, The Widow Woman by Gerard Dillon (£20,000-£30,000).
