A 42-year-old man was rushed to hospital last night after he was seriously assaulted in Dublin city centre.

Gardaí are investigating the assault which happened on Montague Place near St Stephen's Green yesterday evening. A garda spokeswoman said the victim suffered serious head injuries and was taken by ambulance to St James Hospital. His condition is described as critical.

The incident occurred between 6.50-8.30 on Wednesday evening and Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to contact Pearse Street Garda Station on 01 666 9000 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.
