Independent News & Media said it is confident it will improve its underlying profit in 2005 in line with previous expectations.

"Strong revenue conditions have carried on through the second quarter, and assuming a continuation of these favourable conditions your board remains confident of a meaningful improvement in underlying profit for 2005," said chief executive Sir Anthony O'Reilly at the company's AGM.

He said that circulation and advertising revenues were comfortably ahead of last year and that trading conditions remained positive.

He added that Independent has now finalised the £67.3 million sale of its iTouch unit to For-side.com and will receive payment for the deal by June 24th.

The company will issue a more detailed pre-close trading statement at the end of June.
