A search is under way in Canada for a young Irishman who went missing while swimming with friends in British Columbia on Friday afternoon last.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police have been in touch with family and friends of the missing man who has been living and working in Canada.

The missing man has been named locally as David Gavin from Moneen, Castlebar.

He had been working in the financial sector in Dublin but moved to Vancouver, Canada, recently with his Irish girlfriend.

David is a son of Michael Gavin, an official with Mayo County Council, and Angela Gavin.

It is understood both parents travelled to Canada at the weekend when news broke that their son had gone missing.

The 26-year-old is believed to have been diving in a river with friends around 3.30pm (local time) on Friday. The alarm was raised when he failed to resurface.
