Sir, – I was flabbergasted when I read in “Weather warning as temperatures soar” (News, July 16th) that the showers and thunder expected to follow the exceedingly high temperatures of Monday and Tuesday were described as a “deterioration”.
Given that high temperatures can lead to the premature death of many hundreds of people, an increase in demand on the health services, in the number and intensity of forest and peatland fires, and a depletion of fresh water supplies, it would have been more appropriate if you described the likelihood of showers as welcome.
It is absurd to describe temperatures above the low 20s and prolonged dry spells as good. – Yours, etc,
