Sir, – Karlin Lillington recommends that we resist the temptation to unnecessarily upgrade our mobile phones each autumn when new models are released on to the market (“Smartphone users should ignore damaging and unnecessary upgrades”, Net Results, October 6th).I renew my phone every two years, not because I’m unhappy with the performance of the phone but because the battery starts to fade, meaning that I must carry a charger with me wherever I go. Installing a new battery is expensive and must be done by a specialist.
The EU is about to introduce an initiative whereby all smartphones must use the same USB-C charger. Why not also introduce a rule that smartphone batteries should be accessible without opening the phone, so that we could change the battery as easily as we change the batteries in our TV remote controls? – Yours etc,
