Sir, – Lara Marlowe reports that “Parisians are to vote on whether to ban rental e-scooters after deaths” (World, January 23rd). She notes that e-scooters were responsible for three deaths and 317 injuries last year in the city. She tells us that several Paris suburbs, as well as Nice, Toulouse, Barcelona, Copenhagen and Montreal, have already banned rental e-scooters completely.
What is the situation here in Ireland? Legislation is quietly going through the Oireachtas. These “powered personal transporters” will not require registration, licensing, insurance or taxation.
We’ve had a brief respite from people of all ages on e-bikes, e-scooters and ordinary scooters whizzing past us on the footpaths without warning, due to the cold weather.
