Sir, – A lot has been said about cycling, safety and dangerous junctions in the past few days on the Irish Times letters pages.
As evidenced by the year-on-year increase in road deaths, our roads are not safe.
The biggest causes of death and injury on our roads is driver speed, driver intoxication and drivers distracted while using phones – all enabled by a shocking lack of enforcement.
One of the most effective ways to make roads safer is to design them in such a way that speed is not possible in certain areas and that cycle lanes are separated from roads. This requires political will at the local level.

Unfortunately, many councillors fear they will lose the votes of motorists who do not like to be inconvenienced for the safety of vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclists. – Yours, etc,
