Sir, – Thank you for the article “Rise of the ‘silver sisters’” (Joanne Hunt, Magazine, June 1st).
I have been enjoying a dye-free life for over 15 years (I’m now in my late 40s) and I’d like to add one point to the list of benefits mentioned – embracing the grey in your hair also presents the opportunity to re-evaluate your relationship with colours more generally.
Ditching hair dye can be an absolute revelation when it comes to wearing colours that work with your natural skin and hair tones, instead of fighting against them. It may well be that strong colours that looked well with a dark, dyed mane of hair are too stark a contrast when it comes to enjoying salt and pepper greys, whites and natural skin tones. I’m not saying that you will be limited to a medley of gentle, pastel hues, more that it’s worth taking the time to reassess your wardrobe and cull colours as necessary, leaning into shades that really bring your silver hair, long or short, to the fore.
This exercise can work as an extremely therapeutic spring clean and a bit of a learning curve, as well as opening you up to a whole new world of upbeat interactions with others.

For me, going grey has been an extremely positive experience – 99.9 per cent of comments I receive come from females, of all ages, who couldn’t be more enthusiastic about my grey hair. The most recent feedback I received was in Gorey a few days ago. I was crossing a road when a lady shouted to tell me my hair was “amazing”.
What more could you ask for on a sunny Saturday afternoon? “Thank you!”, I replied and then kept going, walking taller and basking in the goodness of my fellow womankind. In short, anyone considering going grey has my full support. Just do it! – Yours, etc,
