Sir, – Tánaiste Simon Harris will not be happy to learn that Fine Gael has dropped to its lowest level of support in a recent Business Post/Red C poll (Seen & Heard, Business, March 30th). Fine Gael is now sitting at 17 per cent, which means that it is five points behind both Fianna Fáil and Sinn Féin. Micheál Martin’s party has seen a rise in popularity, rising two points to 22 per cent. Mary Lou McDonald’s party dropped one point to 22 per cent.
It appears that the Harris effect has lost its magic as the reality of being in a leadership role is now hitting home.
The Tánaiste often comes across as being a man who is always in a hurry. If this is how one is perceived, then the inference could be of a man who is moving so quickly that it seems that maybe he forgets to listen to what the electorate are saying to him. The results of this poll present the Tánaiste with a space to reflect on how he and his party can now up their game. – Yours, etc,
