Sir, – In your article “Preliminary examination into cause of Irish woman’s death on New York boat inconclusive,” (August 6th), Taoiseach Micheál Martin described the deceased as “a young, beautiful, very talented, creative woman”.
While no doubt meant kindly, I find it disappointing that in 2025, a woman’s physical appearance is still highlighted in an official tribute.
Would we ever hear a man described in similar circumstances as “handsome” before mentioning his talents?
It may seem minor, but these word choices matter. They reflect the ongoing tendency to frame women through the lens of how they look; even in death. Surely her creativity, ambition, and achievements deserve to stand on their own? – Yours, etc,
