Sir, – Brianna Parkins’s amusing observation overheard in a Dublin pub (“Good chat? Only when you leave Ireland you realise it isn’t universal,” September 27th) reminded me of my own fairly recent visit to the capital.
Passing the GPO I noticed a young garda, arms folded, leaning against the wall. Considering the negative publicity the Garda can get for lack of visibility on the streets, I thought to myself how rare, but reassuring, it was to see him.
Two young Dubs coming right behind me started to slag the garda for taking his ease. Turning slightly, I said I thought it was great to see a garda on duty, asking: “When did you last see a garda on the street?”
“When he was putting cuffs on me,” came the instant response.
