Renewables clearly won’t produce enough and we cannot continue to use fossil fuels

Sir, – Regarding your story “Billions of euro in FDI being lost due to grid constraints,”(January 16th) and the State missing, and likely to continue missing, our climate targets: we need to start thinking long and hard about how we produce much-needed power.

Renewables clearly won’t produce enough and we cannot continue to use fossil fuels. The only real alternative is nuclear power. It would give us energy self-sufficiency and cut emissions. Chancellor Friedrich Merz of Germany has said this week the decision to close Germany’s nuclear power plants was a big mistake.

Our mistake has been to ignore the issue of good clean nuclear power for the past five decades. – Yours, etc,

PAUL WILLIAMS,
