Letters: Camhs’ operating procedures should be audited regularly to ensure compliance

Clear guidelines are in place to prevent the situation that occurred in north Kerry

Letter of the Day

Sir, – I read with shock and dismay the findings of the independent review by Dr Colette Halpin into Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (Camhs) in north Kerry.

The results are quite disturbing and it is unimaginable, in a modern health service, how such a situation can arise. In any service, be it public or private, there are clear guidelines to prevent such an occurrence happening.

The basis of any organisation is the standard operating procedure (SOP), which clearly lays down how a procedure is carried out so that it conforms to best international practice.

It is futile having an SOP unless it is audited regularly to ensure compliance, and in this case I have my doubts.

Our health service has many cases going through the courts which could possibly be avoided had SOP been followed. The public must be protected so they don’t suffer harm. – Yours, etc,

GERRY BUCKLEY,
