Here’s a capital idea for ‘honest’ Micheál Martin

Since the tax is too high, cut it

Sir, - Taoiseach Micheál Martin said recently, “I think capital gains tax is too high in Ireland, if I’m honest”. Surely, as Taoiseach, he has to be honest?

Why not nudge the Minister for Finance to cut it so? Former Fianna Fáil minister for finance Charlie McCreevy cut the tax to 20 per cent years ago. Easy to do it again. It will free up money for better savings schemes that Simon Harris may have in mind. Why not just do it? If it doesn’t work out, just increase it back to 33 per cent. - Yours, etc,

JOHN McKEOWN,

Waterford.
