How can Ireland be neutral and support allies?

Who are our allies?

The Irish Times - Letters to the Editor.

Sir, - In Wednesday’s newspaper when discussing Ireland’s planned purchase of French military equipment, Conor Gallagher stated that it was a long-standing doctrine of the Defence Forces to resist invasion for as long as possible until support arrives from allies.

Who are our allies? Are they UK, France, Germany and the US? If we would expect support from our allies isn’t it logical and reasonable that our allies expect support from us?

However, Ireland’s stated doctrine is that we are neutral. How can we support our allies and at the same time, be neutral in a conflict between an ally and their enemy?

Our overriding national policy seems to be hypocrisy. - Yours, etc,

GERARD McDERMOTT,

Gorey,

Co Wexford.
