Sir, – May I be permitted to draw the attention of the Government to two bits of information which they might not have yet noticed?
While recovering from a malady recently I spent time watching TV, particularly the sports channels.
I noticed that among the most frequent and glossiest advertisements appearing, on what are the most expensive platforms for such promotions, were electricity suppliers operating here in Ireland.
So not only do Irish households have to pay for the profit margins for these entities, they must also cough up for these advertisements too.

Coinciding with this, a news report on data just released by the Commission for Regulation of Utilities informed us that one in seven households were in arrears for electricity at the end of 2025. That is 319,459 domestic electricity customers owed money on their bills in December 2025.There has been a 19 per cent increase in the number of people struggling to pay their electricity bills since the end of the 2024.
I suggest that these matters are related and the Government might consider intervening now and not allow an access to electricity crisis emerge as happened for almost identical reasons in housing. – Yours, etc,
JIM O’SULLIVAN,
