President Connolly and precedent

That is the deal that candidates to the office sign up to

Sir, – I find my myself in the unusual position of agreeing with everything President Catherine Connolly said but not her right to say it. The role, and indeed the lifestyle, of the president is a like-for-like replacement of the monarchy that preceded it.

That is the deal that candidates to the office sign up to. If, for example, a person had been elected that then went on to make public “pro-life” announcements they would be quickly criticised for misusing the office.

Connolly should not set a precedent in this regard. – Yours, etc,

DAVE SLATER,

Kilkea,

Co Kildare.
