Madam, - Sara Keating's reference to the reception in Greece of Samuel Beckett's plays in the writer's centenary year deserves a footnote (Arts, January 2nd).
The Irish Embassy in Greece very generously offered us the chance to host the travelling photographic Beckett exhibition which was displayed in Athens and Thessaloniki, together with a lecture by Sarah Jane Scaife. When we approached the premier exhibition space in Corfu, we were asked: "Who is this Beckett, and what sort of pictures does he do?"
We were then told that "the committee" would have to examine these pictures and decide on their suitability. When we explained that Beckett was a Nobel-prize-winning writer, we were told to apply to the municipal library for a display space. The library committee declined our request.
Corfiots are still waiting for Beckett. Eleutheria! - Yours, etc,
