Crack cocaine and class

Sir, – I commend Fintan O’Toole for his article about the crack cocaine crisis and for his reference to the heroin epidemic in lower Crumlin in the 1980s and 1990s (“Ireland’s crack cocaine epidemic has consequences far worse than any viral pandemic”, November 27th).

It would appear that lessons learned from that time have been forgotten. This time around there is no Tony Gregory or communities willing to march to bring Government and national attention to the devastating effects of drugs.

I hope the State steps up to this challenge.

There appears to be a culture of drug snobbery with middle-class cocaine users looking down on users of other drugs in working-class areas and yet some regularly visit deprived areas to get their fixes.
