Sir, – I have been a parishioner in Booterstown since I got married in 1960. On one Sunday each month, there is a parish hospitality event after the Children’s Mass. Recently the organisers wanted more help, so I volunteered. I just cannot believe that I have to have Garda approval to pour tea, coffee and soft drinks and to help clear up. I fully agree with child protection, but the children are with their parents, and it seems ridiculous to waste the time of the Garda checking forms of people they do not know. Surely the priests and the parish secretary, who all know me, are in a better position to vouch for my suitability for this important task! Does common sense no longer apply to anything? I am not seeking a job in the secret service after all! – Yours, etc,
