Taoiseach and the poppy

Sir, – I read with interest the remarks of Bobby O'Neill, a Fianna Fáil member, who criticises the Taoiseach for wearing a poppy for Remembrance Day in Enniskillen, arguing that it is part of a process of "inching the party closer and closer to the Fine Gael ethos" (Letters, November 17th).

How fragile must the distinction between the two parties be when even a member of one such party regards the differences between them as being so ephemeral that a slight change of decor on a politician’s lapel can bring the division between the two crashing down?
