Former All Blacks captain Tana Umaga has been granted a temporary release by New Zealand to play rugby for French club Toulon later this year.
Umaga is still contracted to the New Zealand Rugby Union despite retiring from internationals but was given a release on account of his long service to the game.
"We agreed to Tana's request because he has given exemplary service to the All Blacks, the Hurricanes and Wellington for more than a decade and is committed to seeing out his playing days in New Zealand," NZRU professional players manager Steve Lancaster said in a statement.
Umaga played 74 tests for New Zealand between 1997 and 2005, including 21as skipper, before announcing earlier this year that he was standing down to spend more time with his family.
In his final season, Umaga led the All Blacks to a series win over the British and Irish Lions, victory in the Tri-Nations championship and a "grand slam" of wins against Wales, Ireland, England and Scotland.
"I have travelled extensively through my career but to now have the opportunity to travel with my family is wonderful," he said.
