Edgar Davids will undergo intensive treatment on his fractured leg in an effort to be fit to face Fulham next Tuesday night.

Tottenham's Dutch midfielder was diagnosed with a hairline fracture of the fibula following a tackle with Aston Villa's Gavin McCann during the goalless draw at White Hart Lane on Saturday.

But with Tottenham uninvolved in the FA Cup this weekend, Davids has extra time to recover and head coach Martin Jol is hopeful he will be available to face the Cottagers.

One player sure to miss out is Teemu Tainio, who suffered a sprained ankle during the closing moments of the Villa game and is expected to be out for three weeks.

Jol has extended his search for new midfielders, following the sale of both Pedro Mendes and Sean Davis to Portsmouth earlier this month.

The Londoners have been linked with a move for Nigel de Jong, who is out of contract at Ajax in the summer.

The midfielder, who can also operate in defence, is a target for numerous clubs and has reportedly already held talks with West Ham, Celtic and Sevilla.

De Jong (21) and his agent are believed to have held discussions with Tottenham's sporting director Damien Comolli on Monday about a £1 million transfer.

On top of the latest setbacks for Davids and Tainio, Jol still has concerns over the fitness of skipper Ledley King.

King has been playing through the pain barrier with a groin problem which refuses to heal properly and Jol accepts he cannot give the England defender the three week lay-off he needs to get fully fit.

Jol admitted: "Ledley played all last season with the same injury. It doesn't stop him playing but it is always niggling away. Three weeks' rest would clear it up but I cannot do without him."
